What is Freya?
Freya was the most powerful and highest-ranking of all goddesses in Norse folklore. Also known as the Goddess of Gold, she rode a chariot pulled by cats and possessed a famous golden necklace, Brisingamen, which was made for her by dwarfs. Women in the Viking Age could attain high ranks, becoming merchants, performers, and even soldiers.
But, the role of Lady of the House was just as powerful. The stories about Freya helped inspire and comfort Viking women and explained a social system in which they could be very independent and equal to men.
